<p>The first and foremost reason to quit smoking is your health. The toxins and chemicals present in cigarette smoke are definitely unhealthy.</p>

<p>It's no secret that there are some obvious differences in the safety of electronic cigarettes as reported by the media when compared to the facts presented by distributors of the product. So who's right? Would you believe both of them? If we break the argument of both sides down to the nuts and bolts of the disagreement, we will see that they are both correct and are actually comparing apples to oranges.</p>
<p>Distributors say, "Yes, electronic cigarettes are safer for you than traditional tobacco cigarettes." But when the media reports on the topic, they say, "The FDA has not approved these devices and may be hazardous to your health." See the problem yet?</p>
<p>This is a classic case of "lost in translation". Both sources are simply reporting from their stance of "safety". Reporters give the news from a non-smoking stance while distributors sell to smokers who are comparing the product to an already existing tobacco smoking habit. It may not be safer than not smoking at all, but that is yet to be proven.</p>
<p>Combustion is at the heart of the toxins in cigarette smoke. Or perhaps to be more clear, the creation of the smoke itself. When a flame hits the tobacco and ignites, it is in that moment that the 4,000 chemical agents come to life as a health hazard. And they can be created by lighting almost any organic product. The tobacco isn't the biggest culprit in the health risk of smoking, it is the combustion process.</p>
<p>So if we take the ignition out of the combustion process, we are in essence also removing thousands of killer chemicals as well. And you know the carcinogens (cancer causing agents) you're always warned about? They're gone too. Now compare the electronic cigarette which is combustion free to a traditional cigarette and you're suddenly viewing from a different angle. There is only one unproven ingredient in the liquid used by electronic cigarettes that is causing all of this fuss, but the fact still remains that these devices are combustion free.</p>
<p>While the media continues to report their "non-FDA approved" hoopla, smokers are taking well to this new alternative as the internet continues to get flooded with positive reviews from electronic cigarette users. Thousands of people have reported drastic improvements in their senses of taste and smell as well as their overall health after making the move away from tobacco products.</p>
<p>While the distributors seem rightly biased for them, the media will likely continue to carry a bias against them, at least until the FDA gets around to working something out. In the mean time, smokers will continue to have the freedom to make an educated decision for themselves and consult their doctors about the new smoke-free alternative popping up across the globe.</p>

<p>If you ask anyone who has spent a long time smoking, they will tell you they feel it is very difficult if not impossible to quit smoking without help. Try one or all of them and be sure to start now.</p>
<p>If you know what causes you to light up a cigarette, you are well on your way to success with <a href="http://www.benefitsofgivingupsmoking.com/likes/quit-smoking.html" class= "linkcloak">stopping smoking</a> once and for all.</p>
<p><strong>1.</strong> Make a promise to yourself that you are going to quit.  Also, let everyone know you are quitting.  Set yourself up for success by being accountable.</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> Remove all tobacco products, ashtrays, and cigarette lighters from your living spaces at home and at work.  Be sure to rearrange furniture in your home if it represents a temptation. <p><strong>4.</strong> Don't talk yourself into having a cigarette; that is self sabotage.  Sometimes we will make ourselves believe that because we had a tough day at work that we deserve a cigarette.  Not true this is just an excuse.  Don't break your new routine.</p>
<p><strong>5. </strong>You should know that the most important battle you will face in quitting smoking will be the one that rages in your mind.  Don't let a lack of information cause you to go off track.  Get on the internet and do a little research.  Find out how you can support your efforts at the mental level.</p>

<p>If you have reached the point that you are desperately looking for help to quit smoking, the simplest advice would be to just quit. However, things are not as simple as that. It is easier said than done. And, this advice can come only from non-smokers or who have never successfully quit themselves.</p>
<h3>So here is my advice - from a smoker of twenty years and a non-smoker of ten.</h3>
<p>So, when you are sick of smoking, the first thing for you to do is look at the reasons that led you to this point. You may want to quit because you have smoker's cough; a serious health scare; desire a better environment for your children; or just want to quit for yourself because you know it is the right thing to do. Whatever the reason(s) you must realize that the desire to quit alone is not strong enough to help you quit. In fact, it is not enough for 97% of the people. Only 3% might be as desperate to take the jump regardless of the consequences.</p>
<p>If you belong to the majority, you need to think, plan and use a strategy to get rid of an old habit.</p>
<p>You may want to quit because you have smoker's cough; a serious health scare; desire a better environment for your children; or just want to quit for yourself because you know it is the right thing to do. Look at your reasons and write down all the emotions and reasons you want to quit. These reasons will help you on your journey to becoming a non-smoker.</p>
<p>Note your reasons for quitting and then fortify them by searching the internet for as much useful information as you can find.  Information is power.  The more you know about the task at hand, the less hold the nicotine monster will have over you.</p>
<p>Once you have the desired information, buy a 'stop smoking program' that addresses your concerns about quitting. Make sure the program is a step-by-step guide that gives you the resolve to beat this nasty habit.</p>
<p><strong>And, for heaven's sake, don't stop here. Once you have got the program, please use it!</strong></p>
<p>The mind will make hundreds of excuses to tell you that you can start using the program tomorrow. But tomorrow never comes. When it comes, it comes as today, and then you wait for the next day. Always remember, if you don't start now, you probably won't start at all. So, get the information you need - order a program - and start using it now.</p>
<p>You'll be glad you did because it is the first step that is the most difficult. Once, you have taken the first step you will sail through the rest of the process.</p>

<p>It's difficult to quit smoking. Even those who were successful in their efforts will likely say it was incredibly difficult. There are a many methods to try and quit smoking. If you aren't successful with one, try another. It's imperative for your health (and the health of those around you)that you quit smoking as soon as possible. Always check with your doctor before starting any non-smoking program.</p>
<p>Most people who make up their minds to stop smoking decide to go cold turkey. This means that one day they just stop. Unfortunately, it seldom works. Strong willed people tend to think they can make it, but will power has little to do with the process. Nicotine is among the most addictive of drugs, which can cause you severe withdrawal problems. Some people are successful for a while when they quit cold turkey, but generally they start again soon.</p>
<p>Another option is to use nicotine gum or patches to slowly wean yourself off of your nicotine addiction. There are directions on the packages for use, and many people find this method a great way to quit smoking. This way you can also wean yourself off at your own pace. Be sure to follow directions on the package very carefully. The best idea is to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your plan. Some people do find this method unsuccessful because it does not satisfy the hand to mouth habit that smoking has developed. Unfortunately smoking usually becomes not only a physical addiction but a mental and emotional one as well.</p>
<p>Finally, you can use medication to help you beat your smoking habit and nicotine addiction. Make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible and discuss your options. They can prescribe a medication that has few side effects and has a good success rate. Never begin taking someone elses prescription medication, some medications could interfere with other medications you are currently taking.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.benefitsofgivingupsmoking.com/likes/quit-smoking.html" class= "linkcloak">Stopping smoking</a> is a lifelong process. The social habit of smoking hard can be hard to stop long after you've beat the nicotine addiction. You may need to change your social life, at least temporarily, while you try to quit smoking. For example, you may need to stop putting yourself in social situations where you smoked, such as enjoying a cigarette with a drink. This is a hard social to break and It may be necessary for you to these pitfalls for a while as you are trying to quit your dependence on a nicotine habit.</p>
<p>If you smoke you should see your doctor immediately. Quitting now can add years to your life and help you avoid many diseases that can be contributed to smoking. Do yourself a favor and start quitting today.</p>

<p>If you've been a smoker for any length of time, you've given thought to quitting.  Why haven't you?  Because you keep making excuses like "Now's not a good time for me" or "I need to lose some weight first."  You know exactly what I mean because if you haven't said these words, you know someone who has.</p>
<p>First things first.  Get out a notepad and spend some time writing down the exact reasons that are driving you to rid yourself of this habit.  Then once you are done with that, turn the page over and jot down all the reasons (excuses) you might make to justify why you haven't.</p>
<p>The act of putting your thoughts to paper gives you clarity.  It allows you to sit back and subjectively analyze not only why you want to quit, but to scrutinize all the excuses that are keeping you from doing so.  Doing so in this fashion will show you how silly your excuses are in comparison to the goal you are looking to attain.</p>
<p>Have a look at a few of the most often stated excuses and apply them to your list if applicable, however in the end it is your job to list every single excuse as to why you smoke that you can think of.</p>
<h3>"Smoking helps to keep me thin."</h3>
<p>The blunt answer to this one is 'who cares!'  Studies have shown that you are better off to be 70+ pounds overweight than to smoke when it comes to your health, but that's not a goal you are looking to attain either.  The truth is that yes, some people do gain weight after quitting, but this is usually less than twenty pounds and if that frightens you, then this problem can be easily remedied by careful and detailed planning before you quit.  Get it through your mind that you are not going to substitute food for cigarettes and if you do, it is healthy foods like celery, carrots and fruit, not candy bars, chips and other 'comfort food'.</p>
<h3>"Smoking is too enjoyable to quit."</h3>
<p>If that's the case, then why are you reading an article on quitting smoking?  Truth is that I also said this exact same thing.  It's purely a defense mechanism so you can justify why you smoke to other people.  The problem is that as I said before, if you say something enough times, eventually you will come to believe it.  This is no different.  So it's time to be completely honest with yourself.  Do you really enjoy smoking or is it just a lie you've come to believe?  What do you love about it?  Is it the coughing, the breathlessness, the stale smell in your hair, clothes, car and home?  What is it that you truly appreciate about what smoking does for you?  When you look at it that way and actually write the answers down, I think you'll find that you really don't like smoking very much at all.</p>
<p>Don't take what I am saying the wrong way.  It is not meant to be cruel or mean.  It is solely meant to shake you up and wake you up to the fact that any excuses you make as a smoker now or in the past will do nothing but keep you smoking forever.  The sooner you realize this, the easier it will be to quit.</p>
<p><strong>Trust in yourself and you'll find that you already have what it takes to beat these lies.</strong></p>

<p>First of all, just talking about relapses can be dangerous because once the thought of slips enters the mind it is difficult to get rid of it, and you unconsciously will it to happen. Have you heard the story of a boy trying to learn cycling? He was so scared of hitting against the stone on the road that on a wide road he saw only the stone and banged right into it.</p>
<p>If you are thinking about quitting smoking, do not make plans for, nor allow for any 'slips', 'just ones' or any 'accidents' for that matter.  The old saying goes - 'If you fail to plan, you plan to fail' but I would also like to add to that the advice of 'If you plan for slips or accidents, you are more likely to have one as opposed to if you adamantly tell yourself that there will be no allowance for moments of weakness.'</p>
<p>However, it is equally foolish to delude yourself that you cannot go wrong. So, when the slip does happen, chastise yourself until you feel completely guilty. Let the guilt go deep down so that it becomes a loud resisting voice when temptation strikes again. It is for this reason that support groups are recommended. They help you regain strength to overcome such hurdles.</p>
<p>If by chance you have had more than one 'slip' or have repeated 'slips', it is time to be honest with yourself.  I know that a lot of people are going to disagree with me on this, but please don't send me any letters because I have probably spoken to more smokers and non-smokers about this subject than most people.  My advice is this.  Stop trying to fool yourself into thinking that these occasional slips are fine and are just part of the normal quitting process - they aren't!</p>
<p>You have to be continuously vigilant for these slips otherwise you will eventually start smoking as much as you used to smoke, if not more. Whether you like to believe it or not, this happens every time.</p>
<p>Admitting failure gives you strength to start again. If you slip too often, it is time to admit failure and start all over again. But, go slow the second time. Make a note of all that went wrong; try to collect information on how to deal with the specific problems and then start again. It is far better to realize that you have missed your target this time around and get back on a new and better course than to delude yourself that you are succeeding in your resolve to quit smoking barring the few aberrations.</p>
<p>It is much better to realize that you have missed your target this time around and get back on a new and better course than to continue smoking and that too with a guilty conscience. It will shatter your spirit completely.</p>

<p>If you are not sure whether or not a person can really quit smoking, let me promise you that anyone can do so. By deciding to stop smoking, you could live for many more years.</p>
<p>Here are some very important steps which have been known over time to help people quit smoking.</p>
<p><strong>1.</strong> To start you will need to make up your mind and stick to the decision. If smoking is something you need to quit, once you have completed this you have now passed the most important step. Afterward, you will need to choose an exact date, then make sure you promise to stick to that specific date, making absolutely no excuses.</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> Before the actual date, take time to get rid of everything related to cigarettes. If you have ashtrays or lighters throw them out; if you have a private stash of cigarettes or tobacco, get rid of them as well. The whole concept is to eliminate smoking from your life.</p>
<p>With that being said, make sure to have some fun activities lined up. If you don't want to do healthy activities such as jogging or biking, try playing video games or read a book you enjoy.</p>
<p><strong>3.</strong> We all know that drinking water is important, but even more so when you begin to stop smoking. If you do not like water, try some herbal tea or fruit juice instead. Sip it slowly and continuously. The goal is to distract yourself from smoking and keep your mind occupied with other matters and healthy activities.</p>
<p><strong>4. </strong>Make the decision to become more active, as long as as your overall health and wellness allows it. This can mean doing little things like taking a walk around the neighborhood, or making the decision to walk up the flight of stairs rather than using the escalator or elevator. Here's is an easy step - on your next trip to the supermarket, go to the far end of the parking lot and park your car, instead of parking near the entrance. Besides making this a good quick walk to the entrance, it can possibly prevent your car from being bumped because you parked too close to someone else.</p>
<p><strong>5.</strong> Be proud of your accomplishment in making this decision; think about all you are going to do. Nasty withdrawal symptoms are certain to occur, which is normal and not at all surprising. Do not allow your cravings, or times of irritability, to derail your efforts to quit. You've made the decision to stop smoking - now go through with it.</p>
<p><strong>6.</strong> Change up your routine; do not go to places where you would usually go where there are cigarettes always ready and available. Do something without much thought, something that does not include smoking.</p>
<p><strong>7.</strong> Stop putting it off. Don't find excuses to keep you from improving your health by quitting smoking. Each of us faces problems in our daily lives and we cope in different ways, but these should not be used as an excuse to put off your decision to quit smoking.</p>
<p><strong>8.</strong> Positively reward yourself for making such as great change in your life. Since every pack of cigarettes that you do not purchase is basically extra money in your pocket, use these funds to enjoy a night out for yourself, or with a friend or a loved one. Naturally, you should select an activity that does not involve smoking.</p>
<p><strong>9.</strong> Don't count on junk food to satisfy your cravings for a smoke. When we quit smoking, our hands and mouth are left without their customary activity; you can be ready for this and fix up some healthy fruit and raw vegetable snacks.</p>
<p><strong>10.</strong> Keep in mind that tomorrow will be easier than today, and the next day will be even easier. If you have the urge to smoke a cigarette, keep in mind what you have to lose by smoking, and all the benefits you gain by quitting smoking.</p>
<p>One of the old expressions is, "today is the first day of the remainder of your life." I would like to reword this to, "today will be the first day of your life as a non-smoker, breath in deeply and love life to the fullest".</p>

<p>It is never easy for anyone to quit a habit.  Changing your habits never happens quickly either.  It takes time and energy and perseverance, but habits can be changed.</p>
<p>There are many good reasons to quit smoking.  Some involve health concerns such as removing yourself from the high risk factors relating to heart attack, stroke and lung cancer. Some involve monetary as the rising cost of cigarettes themselves. Some reasons can be peer or family pressure because it can cause serious health problems to a family member. The reasons to quit are many and varied.</p>
<p>*You need to develop a plan to quit smoking and then you must begin following that plan immediately.  Making a plan and not doing anything about is as bad as not making a plan at all.</p>
<p>*Talk to your doctor about quitting.  Their support and possible aids could make quitting easier.  Also, with regular follow-ups, they are someone you must be accountable to.</p>
<p>*A daily exercise program can help relieve the stress associated with the quitting process.  The exercise can also help heal your body from the years of damage you have inflicted on yourself.</p>
<p>*Determine your quit date. By working backwards, determine how many cigarettes you can smoke each day until you reach zero. Also, only buy one pack at a time or change brands to make it more of a chore and less pleasant.</p>
<p>The reasons to quit smoking are as varied as the reasons someone began to smoke in the first place.  They may have begun to smoke because of a dare or peer pressure.  Most people did not start smoking with the idea that they would become addicted for life.</p>
<p>Anything is possible for us as human beings. That is not to say that quitting smoking is easy, because it is not. There are many ways and many aids available to quit smoking, but the main thing to remember is how much better your life will be without the cigarettes.</p>

<p>One of the more serious possible conditions from long-term cigarette smoking is <a href="http://www.infoonheartdisease.com" target="_blank">heart disease</a>. That's a statement we hear often in discussions of smoking. But what does it really mean? What is heart disease, and how does smoking cause it?</p>
<p>Heart disease is when one of your major arteries that lead from your heart and carry needed oxygen to the blood becomes partially blocked. If the blockage worsens it can lead to a heart attack or a coronary meaning your coronary artery is blocked and the flow in that artery stops. That is why another term for heart disease is coronary artery disease.</p>
<p>Smoking makes a person's chances of having <a href="http://www.infoonheartdisease.com/coronary-heart-disease/coronary-heart-disease" target="_blank">coronary artery disease</a> or heart disease much greater for a variety of reasons.</p>
<p>Smoking slows the flow of oxygen into the heart which increases your chances of heart disease. The carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke attaches itself to the hemoglobin of the red blood cells. These are the cells that help carry oxygen to the heart.</p>
<p>Cigarettes also contain nicotine which works against the heart because it robs the blood of oxygen that the heart needs. It also makes the blood clot easier which increases your risk of a heart attack.</p>
<p>But even more subtle, yet still dangerous, effects are produced by nicotine. One of the most serious, long term, is that it encourages the growth of fatty deposits on the arteries, constricting blood flow and hardening the blood vessel.</p>
<p>Arthrosclerosis is a condition where good cholesterol called HDL (high density lipoprotein) is decreased in the blood which allows for fat deposits to form on the arteries. Smoking greatly encourages and feeds this condition.</p>
<p>There is a reason that heart disease and stroke are often mentioned together when discussing the harmful effects of smoking. With the clogging of arteries brought on by smoking there is an increase in blood pressure as the blood struggles to pass through the constricted arteries. Because of the increased stress on these arteries and the heart, any weak area will most likely rupture. That means that oxygen will not flow to the brain and that leads to a stroke.</p>
<p>When your arteries become hard they are not able to perform their tasks without extreme stress.</p>
<p>Like a hose, it carries fluid and can only do so when there are no holes. At the same time, unlike most hoses, it's 'on' all the time. Any stoppage of blood flow, however temporary, causes immediate health problems. Tissues need a continual supply of blood or they die very quickly.</p>

<p>If you want to quit smoking - and truly quit, not just have it as some passing fancy - you must hold yourself accountable not only to yourself but others as well.  The nicotine beast, other smokers and your subconscious can all be very persuasive threats on the road to quitting so this is why I so firmly advocate a solid support group of at least two or three other people.  Five is even better.</p>
<p>If you only have to answer to yourself when an overwhelming urge strikes, that's only one person the nicotine beast has to overcome, but if you have a group, that's a whole other story.</p>
<h3>Being accountable to others in the group</h3>
<p>Of course, you begin by being accountable to yourself first. For example, if you've been off cigarettes for a week and then the irresistible urge strikes you, and you make hundred and one excuses, you battle with guilt and frustration, and ultimately, you give in because the nicotine beast is very strong and you are only one person. This is the story of many people who break down at this point.</p>
<p>But what if you had five loyal soldiers standing between the nicotine demon and you?  Ah, now that's a completely new ball game.</p>
<h3>How to make it work?</h3>
<p>Set up a small support group for yourself whether it be via email, telephone, or a support forum.  Tell these people your goal to quit smoking but also ask them not to pester you about it - just to be there when you need help and positive support.  Use them for encouragement.</p>
<p>Now, with a support group in place, when you again encounter an overwhelming urge to smoke, you will have to get past not just your own guilty conscience, but you have to call these five people and tell them that you have decided to start smoking again.</p>
<p>If you can do this much, you need not do anything else. They will do the talking and you just have to sit back and listen without getting angry or upset. Chances are that they will talk you out of your momentary weakness and encourage you to stick to your resolve. And it may not even take all five voices to convince you. However, if you can make it through all five members of your support team and you still think that you can do with just 'one' cigarette, then you must know that it is not just one " it is always the first one that will get you.</p>
<p>The support system works so well only because of numbers; it is six times more difficult to convince six people (your support team plus you) against the 'one'.</p>
<p>One last point, you must be well informed about the whole process before you try to quit smoking. The more you know about quitting, the more successful you will be.</p>

<p>Finding a support system that works for you is crucial in becoming a non-smoker.  It needn't be a lonely, isolated journey which you take by yourself.  Whether it be via an online forum, local church group, or through family and friends (exercise caution here), the key is to find people to help you in times of strife.</p>
<p>The online support option is fantastic for those who have limited time in which to establish a local system.  By joining up with community forums that host a smoking cessation board, you get the opportunity to speak with others looking to accomplish the same goal you are.</p>
<p>When searching out these forums, be sure to find one that has the differing stages of quitting smoking broken down so that you can go straight to the area which would help you most.  Find the posts that coincide with the challenges you are facing at the time and again, you will find that others will have had challenges with the very same issues.</p>
<p>Family and friends, on the other hand, can be a blessing or a curse.  They may feel that they are being 'extra' supportive by inquiring repeatedly on how you are doing, but this can become downright irritating and in worst cases, actually cause you to relapse.</p>
<p>Many family members and friends mean well and think they're being encouraging by doing this, when you're going through withdrawal symptoms and are naturally more agitated, this can be detrimental to your success. Sometimes just discussing this with them, before your quit day, can help nip it in the bud and make it a smoother transition.</p>
<p>Another option that a lot of people have found very helpful, is finding a local smoking cessation group. Often these group meetings may be held in a local hospital, at a library, or sometimes they meet at a church. Often you can find these meetings offered for free, or at the very least low cost in most cases.</p>
<p>Community support group meetings generally only last for an hour or so, but they are great place to make personal contact with others striving to become non-smokers.  And it is this personal contact with a support buddy that could be just the help you need in staying smoke-free forever.</p>
<p>Although some methods of support are better than others, the important thing is that you have some to begin with - before you quit smoking.  For without the support, quitting smoking is going to be one of the hardest tasks you are ever going to do.  No sense doing it alone.</p>
